FACT − Did you know?

The 2022 FIFA World Cup was the 22nd FIFA World Cup which took place in Qatar from November 20 to December 18, 2022. It was the first World Cup to be held in the Arab world and to avoid the extremes of Qatar's hot climate, the event was held during November and December instead of in the traditional months of May, June, or July. It was held over a reduced time frame of 29 days with 64 matches played in eight venues across five cities. Brazil was one of the top favorites but they did not succeed in bringing the World Cup home. Argentina was crowned the champion after winning the final against the title holder France 4−2 on penalties following a 3−3 draw after extra time.

During the World Cup Brazil's team has paid tribute to their country's football legend Pelé by dedicating their 4−1 victory over South Korea to the ailing 82−year−old who was receiving treatment for respiratory infection at a São Paulo hospital and was also undergoing treatment for colon cancer. The Brazilian players unfurled a large banner featuring Pelé's name and a picture of him in his footballing prime following their match against South Korea at Stadium 974 in Doha, Qatar. Brazil won the match 4−1 and qualified for the tournament's quarter−finals. Also the fans did raise a big banner to honor their legend Pelé.

It was an emotional World Cup for Brazil in 2022. In São Paulo, Pelé, the 82−year−old football god, was admitted to hospital in a worrying condition. The Brazilian Team, also called 'Seleção', did play football for their legend in Qatar and did call on the world to send positive vibes towards Pelé. "Power, King" or "Strength, King". For Brazil it was a world championship in the name of their legendary 'football' father.

Brazil are out of the FIFA World Cup 2022 following a 4−2 loss to Croatia on penalties on Friday December 9, 2022.

After a 0−0 draw in regular time, the 'Seleção' were about to advance to the next stage of the football tournament when Neymar broke the deadlock with a stunning goal mid-way through extra time. But an equaliser from Bruno Petkovic in the dying moments forced the game to go to penalties where two crucial misses from Rodrygo and Marquinhos sealed Brazil's fate.

Brazil's departure from the World Cup at the quarter-final stages came as a shock after they produced a memorable 4-1 rout of Republic of Korea in the round of 16. Their rousing knockout game followed a solid campaign in the group stages where the five-time world champions finished on top of their pool with a 2−0 victory over Serbia, a 1−0 victory over Switzerland and a 0−1 loss to Cameroon.

The five−time champions Brazil, with a squad featuring Richarlison, Alisson and Vinicius Jr, were among the favourites to lift the crown in Qatar but they will now have to wait another four years for an attempt at an elusive sixth title.
